Putting Tip & Drill #1

One of the best tips for improving your putting, and perhaps you've heard this before, is to start with a simple straight putt that you can use as a "baseline" for your improvement and that make it easiet to actually track your own improvment.

Line up a straight putt of about 3 - 4 feet.

In this putting drill your are practicing your straight putt, because its easier to focus on and improve the stroke (you can ignore the break for now). So, if you miss the straight putt you will know that there is an issue with improving your stroke.

Now, start putting two primary objectives:

1. Make sure the putter head is going straight back and straight through.

2. Make sure your putter face is "square to your line" at all times

Your goal is consistency and the creation of stable putt that wiil be just like second nature. Set a goal for the number of putts that you can hole in a row. Make it small and easily attainable at first. Your initial goal can be to make 2 in row. Focus on small attainable goals and the feeling of achievement. Gradually increase your goal as you achieve previous one.

(No cheating! If you miss a putt you have to start at one again!)

And remember, you can do this drill at at home on the carpet or with a putting training aid or store-bought putting green. But the feel is different on the green so try to do some of the drills at the course whenever you can.
